The Interrelationship diagraph (ID) is a Gateway tool© to focus the efforts of the team or organization on one or two priorities. Additionally, it has been found to be helpful in identifying the cause and effect relationships among various issues. Often the ideas are generated from an Affinity Diagram exercise. Interrelationship Tools required: flipchart paper, sharpie type markers, post-it type notes, and colored markers.
Review the chart. Discuss the Driver (greatest influence to all other items) and the Outcome (greatest influence by all other items). Suggestions for the Facilitator:
We have used the ID many times. This tool has generated surprising results. Unexpected "drivers" sometimes appear. The effectiveness of the tool is reflected in comments like;.... "this gives a good picture of influence"...."looks like a spider web", I am surprised that item was the Driver, but it clearly is"....."we now know what task to focus on, first"...."we can do the other items, and let the Outcome fall out from our efforts"....."whew, and we almost spent a lot of time on an Outcome". For more information on the use of this tool and/or a brief interactive exercise to demonstrate the tool, contact; bill@krysak.com. Please refer to the "Interrelationship Diagraph" in your email.
